On the Mic at Vic NAIDOC 2019: A Celebration of Pride and Power
In 2019, I had the honour of MCing the Vic NAIDOC event — one of the most powerful gatherings of community, culture, and pride on the Victorian calendar. I shared the stage with the incredible Sue-Anne Hunter, and together we held space for an event that was equal parts celebration and strength.
As an MC, I’ve stood at many microphones — but this one meant something more.
The Power of Vic NAIDOC
Vic NAIDOC isn’t just an event — it’s a statement. It’s a space where our people come together to celebrate who we are, remember who we’ve been, and honour those who continue to fight for our futures.
There’s nothing like the feeling of looking out at a crowd full of Elders, families, artists, leaders, and young people — all standing together in unity and pride.
There’s joy.
There’s laughter.
There’s strength in every word spoken, every song performed, and every story shared.
Being part of that — as host, as community, as a voice guiding the flow — was something I’ll never forget.
A Personal Highlight
MCing alongside Sue-Anne was an absolute joy. Her presence, insight and leadership elevated the day, and reminded me what cultural integrity in action looks like.
The energy, the pride, and the honour of holding that mic — it stays with me.
